DAVE LOMBARDO Says SLAYER's Relationship With MEGADETH Is 'Strictly Business'
December 4, 2009AOL's Noisecreep recently conducted an interview with SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo at Los Angeles' Amoeba Records. Watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow.
On the recent online furor he created by offering METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich some drum lessons and whether or not Lars accepted the offer yet.
Lombardo: "Oh, man. No, he hasn't. Yeah, but that was all done as a joke, not really as a joke. It's just me having fun."
Noisecreep: How is Tom [Araya, SLAYER bassist/vocalist] recovering from his back procedure?
Lombardo: "I spoke to him yesterday, which was odd. I just picked up the phone and [went], 'I'm gonna call this guy.' He picked up, and he's doing a lot better. The pain that was hurting him during the tour, that's gone. The injections have helped. So that way he could get better and get back on the road. 'Cause we do miss him."
Noisecreep: Are you looking forward to your tour with MEGADETH as an opportunity to catch up with them?
Lombardo: "Well, I guess if we socialized with them a little bit more, maybe we can catch up on some of the times. But there really isn't that interaction. I just recently spoke to [Dave] Mustaine just for a little bit — five minutes, ten minutes — and that was it. And that was in Japan when we were playing the Loud Park festival. There isn't that buddy friendship like most people might think. It's strictly business."
Noisecreep: Do you have a favorite band to tour with?
Lombardo: "Going on tour with MARILYN MANSON was as common bond as we got. I mean, also BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE on the most recent Mayhem festival. We all got along really good. Having bands like that makes the tour go really smooth, you look forward to every night. If there's a day off or two, it's like, 'Man, when's the next show? C'mon, let's go.' That's cool. That's when it's really a top-notch, great tour. I'm not saying we don't get along with Mustaine, because we do. It's just we're not there. Give it a little time. Maybe they'll open up."
